What Is a BOQ in Interior Design? A Homeowner's Guide
A BOQ — Bill of Quantities — is the itemised breakdown behind an interior quotation. It is the most useful document you have for understanding what you are actually buying.
What a good BOQ includes
A clear BOQ lists each item with enough detail to be checked later:
- Item description and location (room / wall)
- Dimensions and quantity
- Core material and finish
- Hardware and accessories
- Unit rate and total
Red flags to look for
Lump-sum lines with no sizes, missing material names, or phrases like ‘as per design’ without specifications make it hard to hold anyone accountable.
Questions to ask
Before signing, ask:
- What happens if a dimension changes after site measurement?
- Which items are optional upgrades?
- What is excluded from this BOQ?
- How are changes priced during execution?
